Bologna
Bologna is the capital of the province and region Emilia-Romagna.Ancient university town (by convention from 1088), hosts many students that hanimate its cultural and social life. Known for its towers and its long arcades, has a well-preserved historic center (among the largest in Italy), under careful policy of restoration and conservation initiated by the late sixties of last century, despite the serious damage caused by urban evisceration of the late nineteenth century and the destruction of war.
The city, whose origins date back to at least a millennium before Christ, has always been an important urban center for Celts and the Etruscans (Felsina), then under the Romans (Bononia), then still in the Middle Ages as a free municipality ( for a century was the fifth European city by population). Important cultural and artistic center, its role sometimes is hard to be recognized, becuse of the lacking of a "masterpiece" of world renown that can attract mass tourists. However, its artistic and cultural importance is based on a uniform set of monuments and architecture (the medieval towers, the historic houses, churches, the structure of the old town) and museums .
Bologna is an important node of road and rail communications in northern Italy, important trade location and heart of important mechanical engineering, electronics and food industries. Home for important cultural, economic and political institutions too.
