San Leo
Strategic keypoint of the area the fortress of San Leo, originally built by the Romans, was bitterly fought over by the Byzantines, Goths, Franks and Lombards. Around the middle of the eleventh century, arrived to San Leo the important family of Montecopiolo, renamed after this important feud "Counts of Montefeltro", that so much glory and honour will have in medieval and renaissance Italian history. In the second half of the fourteenth century, the fortress was conquered by Malatesta who alternated in its domain to Montefeltro until the next century. In 1502, Cesare Borgia, managed to seize the fortress, after conquered by Della Rovere that held it until the devolution to the Papal Churc State.
